Youth Summit

In October 2016, there was a shooting in the parking lot of June Jordan School for Equity. Thankfully the injuries were less serious than they could have been– but the experience was traumatic for the school community. One month later, with financial and logistical support from Small Schools for Equity, JJSE hosted its first Strength in Numbers Youth Summit, where high school and middle school students from across the city came to the school for student-led workshops and discussions. In the afternoon, city officials including Mayor Ed Lee heard the students’ testimonies and pledged to work with them to create a more just and equitable city. The video below gives a snapshot of the 2016 Youth Summit. JJSE hosted another Youth Summit in April 2018; click here for a video about that second student-led summit.
